Why does LoRa become the first choice for long-distance communication solutions

Due to its low power, long distance, and affordable features, LoRa technology is commonly used in the field of military communications. In addition to military communication applications, lora has gradually become the preferred solution for long-distance wireless radio frequency communication. Why does LoRa become the first choice for long-distance communication solutions? What kind of past and present life has LoRa experienced to grow up?

LoRa is a long-distance wireless transmission technology based on spread spectrum technology, and it is actually one of many LPWAN communication technologies. This solution provides users with a simple wireless communication method that can realize long-distance and low power consumption. At present, LoRa mainly operates in the ISM frequency band, mainly including 433, 868, 915 MHz and so on.

LoRa is a physical layer or wireless modulation used to establish long-distance communication links. Many traditional wireless systems use Frequency Shift Keying (FSK) modulation as the physical layer because it is a very efficient modulation that achieves low power consumption. LoRa® is based on chirp spread spectrum modulation, which maintains the same low power consumption characteristics as FSK modulation, but significantly increases the communication distance. Linear spread spectrum has been used for decades in military and space communications due to its long range and robustness to interference, but LoRa® is the first low-cost implementation for commercial use.

The advantage of LoRa® lies in the long-distance capability of the technology. A single gateway or base station can cover an entire city or hundreds of square kilometers. In a given location, the distance depends largely on the environment or obstacles,modbus ethernet but LoRa® and LoRaWAN® have a link budget better than any other standardized communication technology. Link budget, usually expressed in decibels (dB), is the primary factor in determining distance in a given environment.
